A Multi-Spindle & Rotary CNC Router is a complex ecosystem of mechanics, electronics, and software. When it runs smoothly, it's a production beast. But when a fault occurs—whether it's a stalled spindle or a distorted carving—it brings your factory to a halt.
Downtime costs money. Before you call a technician, many common issues can be diagnosed and fixed right on the shop floor.
This guide categorizes the most frequent problems encountered with multi-head and rotary machines and provides step-by-step solutions to get you back up and running.
Symptom: You are running 4 spindles simultaneously. Spindles 1, 2, and 4 are cutting perfectly, but Spindle 3 is barely scratching the surface (or cutting too deep).
Possible Causes:
Z-Axis Misalignment: The motor mount for Spindle 3 has slipped or was not calibrated.
Tool Length Discrepancy: The bit in Spindle 3 is inserted further into the collet than the others.
Debris in Collet: Sawdust inside the collet is preventing the tool from seating correctly.
Solution:
Step 1: Clean the collet and nut of Spindle 3 thoroughly.
Step 2: Re-insert the tool. Measure the "stick-out" length to ensure it matches the other tools exactly.
Step 3: Perform a Z-Zero Calibration. Lower the Z-axis until Spindle 1 touches the tool sensor. Then, manually adjust the mechanical mount of Spindle 3 until it also touches the sensor (or a gauge block). Tighten the mount securely.
Symptom: When carving a round table leg or column, the result is slightly oval or the dimensions are off.
Possible Causes:
Pulse Equivalent Error: The software settings (Steps per Degree) for the A-axis are incorrect.
Loose Transmission: The belt connecting the motor to the rotary chuck is loose.
Workpiece Slippage: The wood is slipping inside the chuck or tailstock.
Solution:
Step 1: Check the mechanical transmission. Tighten any loose belts or set screws on the timing pulley.
Step 2: Verify the Pulse Equivalent. In your controller (DSP or Syntec), check the A-axis settings. If the gear ratio is 1:6 or 1:10, the steps per degree must match this ratio exactly.
Step 3: Ensure the tailstock is locked tight against the wood. For heavy logs, use a center spur to prevent rotation slip.
Symptom: The machine moves, but one or all spindles fail to spin. The VFD (Inverter) screen might be flashing.
Possible Causes:
VFD Error Protection: The inverter has detected an over-current, over-voltage, or short circuit.
Wiring Issue: A loose wire in the aviation plug (connector) at the top of the spindle.
Water Cooling Failure: If the spindle overheats, internal sensors may cut power (on advanced models).
Solution:
Step 1: Look at the VFD screen code (e.g., E-01, DL). Consult your manual to identify the specific error.
Step 2: Turn off power completely. Open the aviation plug on the spindle. Check for burnt pins or loose wires caused by vibration.
Step 3: Check the water pump. If the water lines are clogged, the spindle will seize.
Symptom: The carving looks fuzzy, has wave marks, or the machine sounds like it is vibrating heavily.
Possible Causes:
Dull Tooling: A blunt bit pushes the wood rather than cutting it.
Loose Gantry/Bearings: The sliders on the linear guide rails are worn out.
Aggressive Speeds: Feeding too fast for the spindle RPM.
Solution:
Step 1: Replace the tool immediately. A sharp tool is the cheapest fix.
Step 2: Check the Linear Guide Rails. If there is play (wiggle) in the gantry, tighten the slider blocks or replace the bearings.
Step 3: Lubricate the rails. Dry rails cause friction and vibration.
90% of Multi-Spindle & Rotary CNC Router failures are caused by dust accumulation and lack of lubrication. Establishing a daily "Clean & Lube" routine is the most effective troubleshooting step you can take.
If you cannot resolve the issue, contact our technical support team. We are here to ensure your production line never stops.
Q1: How do I reset the machine after an emergency stop?
A: Twist the Emergency Stop button to release it. Then, press "Home" or "Return to Origin" on your controller to re-establish the machine's coordinates.
Q2: Why is my machine losing position (stepping) during long jobs?
A: This is often caused by electrical interference (EMI) or a mechanical obstruction. Check that the grounding wire is secure and that nothing is blocking the gantry's movement.
Q3: Can I replace a 2.2kW spindle with a 4.5kW spindle?
A: Usually, yes, but you must also upgrade the VFD (Inverter) and ensure the gantry structure can support the extra weight. Consult us before upgrading.
Q4: What does "Soft Limit Switch" error mean?
A: It means the file you are trying to cut is larger than the machine's working area. Check your G-code file dimensions or re-set your Work Origin point.
